Success Within the Mainstream

SWIM (Success Within the Mainstream) is currently working to respond to the needs of those who belong to this SIG. Our first goal was to identify the needs of those who do or could, benefit from membership in SWIM. At the time we are the largest CAID SIG and growing. We are an outreach group to all teachers working with students who are deaf in settings across the nation. We are comprised of teachers in rural settings with as few as one deaf student and larger public school settings with greater numbers of students who are deaf.

SWIM ON-LINE
In an effort to meet the need to exchange information, a list-serve has been established. This is a well-established listserv with over 100 members. At this time anyone with a vested interest in the education of deaf students is invited to join, with the hope that these educators will see the value of being connected with other professionals in the field of Deaf Education and join CAID as full members. This list-serve has a board of consultants from many established programs for educating deaf students, such as NTID, Gallaudet, and ISU. Current topics under discussion are: co-enrollment, how co-enrollment classes are established/training the teams for success, ways/tools to evaluate children's use of interpreters, readiness to enter mainstream classes, educating students from other countries, educating children with cochlear implants and many more. A file of educational materials is also kept to share with members of this SIG.

If you would like to be a member of this on-line group, mark BH (Success within the Mainstream) on your next CAID membership application and you will automatically be added to the list. If you would like to become part of the SWIM list-serve on a trial basis for 6 months please contact Alisa Burroughss or Kathy Obenhaus .
