President's Perspective
Esteemed Colleagues:
As the oldest organization of teachers in the US (estab. 1850), CAID
has had a long tradition of bringing teachers together for the
purpose of improving teaching and learning for deaf and hard of
hearing students. For over a century, most of these interactions had
to be face-to-face or, where available, limited to dialogues using
hand written and “posted” (mailed) letters with long delays between
exchanges.
For most teachers who were fortunate enough to get support,
attendance at the biennial CAID conference was of major
significance, providing often the only opportunity to interact with
teaching colleagues from other institutions. Many of these
friendships lasted for years with the CAID conference serving as the
“reunion” site for these important events.
CAID is alive and well…and has joined the new millennium. Your
Council is constantly searching for and evaluating new communication
technologies for the purpose of providing a vehicle for the
continuation of the teacher-to-teacher interaction legacy. We have
added enrichment to the mix by including members who are support
professionals (e.g., educational interpreters, counselors,
instructional technologists) and are actively expanding our
membership, including international colleagues.
Your CAID Council colleagues welcome your feedback and suggestions
with respect to ways we can continue to expand our professional
connections and, ultimately, to improve the lives of our students
and their families.
Thank you for your support!
