Mission
Hello CAID Region 1 Members,My name is Chris Kurz and I am your newly elected council member representing the CAID Region 1 group. It was nice meeting with some of you at the recent CAID conference in Washington, DC. The conference was a success, and there were many outstanding sessions.
Currently, I am an assistant professor for the Masters of Science in Secondary Education program at NTID/RIT. I have taught mathematics and science to middle school, high school and college deaf students for twelve years, staring with Kansas School for the Deaf and on to a local community college, and then NTID/RIT. I have a doctorate degree in Foundations of Education from University of Kansas where I wrote a dissertation on mathematics education for the deaf during the nineteenth century. My research and education activities include teacher action research in the classroom, methods materials for math and science, history of deaf education, and technical signs for math and science.
During the conference some of you made suggestions for CAID and this group. One of which is: some kind of wiki website so teachers can become active participants by editing, posting and sharing ideas and concerns, and support others. The website can include links to resources for each of the content areas (mathematics, science, technology, English, social studies, ASL, Deaf Studies, mainstreamed programs, itinerant teaching, etc.). I think that’s a wonderful idea, and I will be working closely with the CAID board members to make this happen. If you have other ideas, please feel free to send them to me via email.
Before I close for the day, there will be a deaf education strand in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Eastern Regional Conference in Boston, October 22-23. The strand includes 12 deaf-related mathematics education sessions and a discussion meeting. If you are teaching or interested in teaching mathematics to deaf and hard-of-hearing students at any department, please make plans to attend the exciting conference. The advertisement for this conference is later in this newsletter.
Thank you for your time. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions about our region, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime via email.
Your representative,
Chris Kurz, PhD
